FIRST-STAGE SHELTER
Emergency accommodation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Our first-stage shelter can accommodate 24 women who are victims of domestic violence, with or without children. A request for accommodation and specific needs are assessed during a phone consultation.
We also welcome a few women in difficulty each year (evicted, unsanitary housing, etc.), as well as for women who are victims of domestic violence (abusive father, mother, sister, etc.), and their children.
Each family has a private bedroom and shares common areas (kitchen, living room, dining room, leisure room, laundry room and bathrooms) with other families. Meals are prepared by a cook. Residents help ensure a clean and pleasant living environment for all.
The length of each stay is 8 weeks, though this can be adapted to each woman’s needs. Individualized psychosocial support is offered to every woman to equip her to break the cycle of violence and regain her autonomy in a safe environment.
We offer children a secure, soothing, warm and stimulating environment. Our educators ensure that all their needs are met.
A financial contribution of $5 per day is requested for accommodation. However, if women have no income or money at the time of their request, they will not be denied shelter.
SECOND-STAGE SHELTER
Accommodation unit in safe and transitional housing
Second-stage housing unit provides a safe environment and specialized support for women and children leaving a first-stage shelter if they are victims of post-separation domestic violence. The risk of intimate partner violence from the ex-spouse is the main criterion for being granted second-stage shelter. When accommodation unit becomes available, we inform first-stage shelters and invite women to submit a request for housing.
Each woman receives housing unit and support from resources specialized in post-separation domestic violence. Our educators support mothers to help strengthen the mother-child bond and to minimize the negative impact of domestic violence on children.
The length of each stay is 6 months, though this can be adapted to each woman’s needs.
My strength, self-worth and values help me overcome my experience on a daily basis so I can move forward and rebuild my life from scratch with a sense of optimism. It’s not always possible, but despite the loneliness and unpredictability, I am still standing and still strong. (…) La Dauphinelle has helped me tremendously in this whole process, in every respect. It’s my second family.
So many times, when I should have spoken up, I didn’t because I felt ashamed. Ashamed because I thought everything that was happening was my fault though, in reality, it was not.
